Do you have anxiety or depression that seems to have no cause? It could be because of an imbalance of spiritual energy. A spiritual energy practice can help you understand the different complementary energies around you and help restore balance between you and the natural forces around you.

And having an imbalance of energies in your life can cause inner turmoil that can affect your emotional, mental, and even physical health, as well as your sense of creativity, purpose, and self-esteem.
In this guide, I am going to introduce you to the different complementary energies that exist in the universe and how to balance them within yourself and your life. What Is a Spiritual Energy Practice?
A spiritual energy practice is any intentional ritual or habit that helps you work with the energetic forces around you. We know that there are forces that act on us we can’t see, yet we can feel. Gravity, for instance, it’s not something tangible that you can see, but we understand that it’s the force that pulls you back to earth.
Spiritual energy is just another type of unseen force that acts on you. You can’t see it, but if you learn how to, you can feel it. By participating in things like daily breathwork, seasonal ceremonies, and other habits that help ground you, you can learn to tap into that energy.
The goal of any spiritual energy practice is balance. Restoring flow when energy feels blocked and deepening awareness of how these forces influence your thoughts and emotions can enhance your well-being. My Spiritual Energy Practices Pinterest Board is a great place to learn about spiritual energies.
Benefits of a spiritual energy practice include:
- Increased clarity and focus.
- A deeper sense of grounding and connection.
- Support of creativity and intuition.
- Emotional resilience during stress or transition.

Harmonizing Divine Feminine and Masculine Energies
Understanding Yin and Yang in Spirituality
The first complementary energy we should learn about, and one you may already be familiar with, is the divine feminine and masculine. They are complementary and balanced. In Taoism, they are known as the Yin (feminine) and Yang (masculine).
Although masculinity and femininity can relate to gender, it doesn’t mean that a man must only adhere to the divine masculine and a woman to the divine feminine. These two energies complement one another and every human must find a balance between them. They are harmonizing. The receptive and the active, the soft and the strong, the intuitive and the logical. When one of these energies dominates, it creates an imbalance, which can cause burnout, lack of focus, or emotional overwhelm.
Practices to Align Feminine and Masculine
- For feminine energy (yin): journaling, meditation, water rituals (like bath rituals), art, nature walks or gardening. Check out my article on the divine feminine in homemaking. You can get some bath salts to enhance your bath experience.
- Journal prompt: What habits help connect you with your intuition?
- For masculine energy (yang): martial arts, strategic games (like tabletop games or chess), weight lifting, practicing discipline and structure. Check out my article on tapping into the divine masculine.
- Journal prompt: How do you achieve your goals?
Choosing one or two activities from each will help balance yourself between the yin- nurturing, receptive, soft energy and the yang — the active, structured energy.
Working with the Five Elements in Energy Practice
Elemental energy is all about working with the five elements. The elements of earth, water, fire, air, and spirit. These spiritual energies are the spiritual connection between the divinity of nature and ourselves. Balancing them in your spiritual energy practice will help create a connection to the universe and keep it balanced.

Earth Energy: Grounding and Stability
Earth energy is all about feeling rooted. It is the energy of structure, security, and practicality. Think of how trees are rooted to the earth. To experience Earth energy, here are some ideas:
- walk barefoot in the soil
- Work with crystals; they are elements of the earth
- gardening
- drink herbal tea and learn herbology
- Journal prompt:What helps me feel safe and steady?
Water Energy: Flow and Emotion
Water energy governs intuition, empathy, healing, and calmness. Think of how being in water makes you feel calm, of how water can cleanse you. In my article about Cancer Season, I talk about ways to use water energy, and my article about bath rituals can give you an idea about how water is a cleansing energy. Here are some ideas for activating water energy:
- Ritual baths or swims for cleansing
- Collect moon water
- Meditate near streams, rivers, or oceans with some meditation accessories.
- Journal prompt: How can I allow my emotions to flow rather than resist them?

Fire Energy: Transformation and Passion
Fire energy is the energy of passion. It sparks creativity, courage, and strength. It is the energy of action. Check out my article on midsummer camping rituals for a meaningful fire ritual. Here are some fire energy practices:
- Candle meditations
- Bonfire ceremonies
- Camping with a campfire.
- Meditate in the sun, feeling its warmth
- Journal prompt:What passion or old pattern needs transformation right now?

Air Energy: Thought and Inspiration
Air energy is the energy of clarity and communication. It is your breath and the wind.
- Practice breath exercises
- Use incense
- Meditate in the wind
- Use wind chimes, chanting or singing
- Journal prompt: What new ideas feel ready to take flight?

Spirit Energy: Connection Beyond the Physical
Spirit unites the other four elements. It’s the element of the gods, the dead, and the unseen world. The greater spirit that connects yet oversees and guides. It is the universe itself.
Practices:
- Prayer connects you with your deity. Use prayer beads to help focus your thoughts.
- Divination: You can learn about divination on my Spiritual Divination Practices Pinterest board.
- Ancestry work, genealogy
- Connect with the dead, with past lives
- Remembrance rituals
- Journal prompt: How do I connect with something greater than myself?
Celestial Spiritual Energy Rituals
Celestial spiritual energy is the energy that comes from the sun, the moon, and the planets. The best way to honor this energy is through practicing astrology and honoring the sun and moon cycles. My article on Astrology and Astronomy and how they relate can get you started.
Sun Energy Rituals
The sun is linked with vitality, strength, and growth. Spiritual energy practices to honor the sun and its life-giving heat and its strength are important. Check out my zodiac decor article and my Spiritual Astrology for Beginners Pinterest Board for ideas on how to get started in astrological energy. Here’s how and when to honor the sun:
- Follow the wheel of the year. The eight festivals follow the seasonal dance of the earth around the sun. Honor the solstices and the equinoxes.
- Honor the Sun on Sundays
Some daily practices:
- Morning sun salutations.
- Watch the sunrise or the sunset
- Outdoor walks or meditations during daylight.

Moon Energy Rituals
The moon’s cycles give us rhythm, intuition, and release. Rituals to honor the moon for giving us tides, for guiding us in the dark, for balancing the night and the day look like this:
Some daily and monthly practices:
- Honor the moon’s phases. Create monthly routines that follow the moon’s cycles.
- Honor the moon on Mondays.
- Practice full moon rituals as times of bringing monthly goals to fruition.
Practice new moon rituals for setting new monthly goals.
Planet Energy Rituals
The planets are our cosmic neighbors. Although they have less of an impact on us than the moon and the sun, you can still incorporate their energy in your spiritual energy practice.

- Mercury: Communication, mind, intellect, and reasoning.
- Honor Mercury on Wednesdays
- Honor Mercury with activities like writing, learning about science, or being social.
- Venus: The planet of beauty, harmony, or attraction. It governs relationships and aesthetics.

- Jupiter: Jupiter is the planet of luck, philosophy, and growth
- Honor Jupiter on Thursdays
- Honor Jupiter by studying philosophy, going on adventures, or gaining new experiences, and also by doing prosperity and fortune work.
- Saturn: Saturn is the planet of time, structure, discipline and responsibility
- Honor Saturn on Saturday and during Capricorn season
- Honor Saturn by focusing on your responsibilities, honoring your commitments, and holding yourself accountable.

Generational Planet Energy
Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto don’t have traditional days of the week or zodiacs that are associated with them because they can’t be seen by the naked eye and thus, were unknown to the ancient astrologers. But they are generational planets because they spend so long in one zodiac that they often characterize entire generations. It’s best to see them in this way when deciding when to honor them. Check your birth chart for when Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto enters a new zodiac, and honor the babies born under this new zodiac. And honor older adults. And meditate on your generational planets and how your generation was innovative (Uranus), mystical (Neptune) or transformative (Pluto). My article on Uranus signs can give you an idea of your generational planets.
The Chakras as Energy Centers
What Are Chakras?
In Indian tradition, chakras are energy centers along the spine, each governing specific physical and spiritual aspects. When balanced, energy flows freely; when blocked, it can manifest as emotional or physical imbalance. Here is how you can use the chakras in your spiritual energy practice:
Practices for Chakra Balancing
- Root chakra (grounding): barefoot walks, red foods.
- Sacral chakra (creativity): dance, orange candles.
- Solar plexus (confidence): core-strengthening yoga, yellow crystals.
- Heart chakra (love/compassion): gratitude journaling, green plants.
- Throat chakra (expression): singing, wearing blue.
- Third eye (intuition): meditation, lavender oil.
- Crown chakra (connection): silent prayer, violet imagery.

Cross-Cultural Views of Spiritual Energy
A spiritual energy practice is a good way to connect with ancestry. All across the world, cultures had mystics and holy people who understood spiritual energy and understood how to use it for balance. These are some global aspects of spiritual energy:
Eastern Traditions
- Qi (China): life force moving through meridians.
- Prana (India): breath as vital energy, practiced through yoga.
- Ki (Japan): energy harnessed in Reiki and martial arts.
Native American and Other Global Spiritual Energy Traditions
- Energy in the land, animals, and ancestors.
- Rituals honoring nature spirits, seasonal cycles, and community harmony.
Check out my article on Polynesian spirituality for the Polynesian concept of Mana and my article on Aztec and Maya spirituality.

Indigenous European Beliefs and Spiritual Energy Practice
- Druids (Celtic): sacred groves, elemental forces, seasonal festivals like Samhain and Beltane. They also believe in the fairy world and its interaction with humanity.
- Nordic traditions: Yggdrasil, the world tree, as a spiritual energy axis; seidr magic for weaving fate. Practice runes for sacred runic magic.
- Greek & Roman: The Greeks and Romans used the most well-known system of astrology; they also used divination such as oracles to interact with energy. Their rituals connected them to the gods. Learn about oracle cards to understand Greek and Roman spirituality.

Spiritual Energy and Western Mysticism
- Hermeticism: “As above, so below” reflects cosmic energy mirroring human energy.
- Alchemy: transformation as both spiritual and material.
- Kabbalah: energy mapped through the Tree of Life.

Beginning a Spiritual Energy Practice for Daily Balance
All these different spiritual energy practices may seem overwhelming at first. You may not know what to work with or where to start. Consider starting with simple rituals of intention. Journaling, meditating, and breathing exercises are all good ways to incorporate spiritual energy into your life. Or maybe you have identified where your imbalance is and can focus on the particular energy force that will help correct it. Either way, it’s best to start small and incorporate more and more.
And remember, it’s okay to be drawn to certain energy but not others. For instance, I have never explored my chakras (not yet), but I am very receptive to elemental energy and celestial energy.
Your Personal Spiritual Energy Practice
Working with complementary energies is about creating balance, not perfection. A spiritual energy practice helps you honor the cycles of life, embrace transformation, and feel more grounded in your daily journey. By harmonizing feminine and masculine forces, engaging with the elements, attuning to the sun and moon, and balancing your chakras, you can open pathways to clarity and connection.
